Suri alpacas are the rarest breed of alpaca, as they are only about 4% of the world alpaca population. In America, through the diligent and focused efforts of a select group of breeders, Suri Alpacas now comprise about 10% of the alpaca population.
Suri fiber is prized for its incredible luster, and the soft and silky feel of the fiber makes it comfortable for those with even the most sensitive skin.
The fleece grows in long, ropy, lustrous locks that are incredible to see and feel.
We shear once a year in June to be able to offer fleeces with the long staple length that is optimal for crafters, felters and hand spinners.
We are members of the Alpaca Owner's Association (AOA) and Suri Network, and are committed to excellence in breeding. All of our alpacas are DNA-tested and registered and we sample every year to send in for updated fiber testing EPD's (Estimated Progeny Differences).
At River Birch Farms, we are working hard to produce full Peruvian, % Accoyo alpacas that are beautiful and correct, as well as "fleece seeds" (crias) that will continue to sustainably grow the distinctive long, lustrous locks desired by hand spinners, felters, and fiber artists.
Alpacas have some of the most lustrous and silky fiber of any animal in the world.
